Frequently Asked Questions
How does Datalastic gather maritime data?
All sailors equip their maritime vessels with devices to send AIS (Automatic Identification System) data. Then the data travels to AIS stations by either terrestrial or satellite AIS receivers. maritime data is transmitting the signals in NMEA code format. Then the data processing partners decode the data from AIS stations. At the end of this process, Datalastic then stores the maritime information from AIS stations in our databases using the ETL data process (Extract Transform Load) data handling process. All that allows you to access and use vessel API instantaneously.
What is AIS?
AIS is an Automatic Identification System that searches and tracks vessels. First, marine device transmits information. Second marine AIS stations receive that marine data for further data processing storage. Third, the data is decoded and analyzed. Law requires all big vessels to share their AIS information. That AIS information includes vessel location, speed, course, direction, and more.
How often vessels location is updated?
We typically update marine data every 2 minutes about vessel movements in real-time. There are tho many factors why some vessel API data might be delayed. Therefore, depending on weather and satellite AIS transmitters there can be a delay in the systems.
