Satellite AIS vs Satellite Estimator API: Which One Fits Your Business?

API Knowledge zone

W is hen it comes to maritime operations, the right data source can make or break your strategy. Whether you need to manage fleets, optimize port operations, or maintain supply chain transparency, choosing between a Satellite AIS Data API and a Satellite Estimator API is a decision that directly impacts efficiency and profitability. Both solutions are designed for global vessel visibility, but they serve different needs.

What is Satellite AIS Data API?

The Satellite AIS Data API delivers real-time vessel information by capturing AIS signals from satellites. Unlike terrestrial AIS, which only covers coastal areas, this maritime vehicle API enables global vessel tracking—even in the most remote parts of the ocean.

Benefits of Satellite AIS Data API:

  1. Global Coverage: Monitor vessels worldwide, including polar and open-sea routes.
  2. Live Vessel Information: Access accurate position, speed, and heading directly from AIS transponders.
  3. High Reliability: Data comes from verified AIS systems onboard ships and boats.

This vessel API is the top choice for businesses that depend on real-time accuracy, such as maritime security, compliance, or global fleet management.

What is Satellite Estimator API?

The Satellite Estimator API works differently. When real-time AIS signals are not available because the vessel is outside of the AIS coverage, it predicts vessel positions in the oceans based on speed, routes, and historical data. While it doesn’t provide live precision, it offers valuable forecasting for businesses that prioritize scheduling.

Benefits of Satellite Estimator API:

  1. Affordable Option: Lower cost compared to full satellite AIS coverage.
  2. Forecasting & ETA Predictions: Helps businesses plan based on estimated arrival times.
  3. Lightweight Tracking: Suitable when minute-by-minute tracking isn’t necessary.

This Ship API is ideal for logistics and supply chain companies looking for predictive insights rather than exact real-time data.

What Data Provided by the Satellite Estimator API?

As we have highlighted before, this endpoint bridges the gap of missing AIS data by delivering intelligently estimated ship positions as if they were tracked by satellite.

These positions are calculated using the vessel’s last known AIS location, declared destination, and route-based ETA models, ensuring you can still monitor vessel movement even when it disappears from AIS networks.

Example SAT-E API Request:

You make an API call to the endpoint specifying the IMO of the vessel checked. You have three parameters that you can use:

1. UUID

2. MMSI

3. IMO

When to Choose Satellite Estimator API?

  • You want a more budget-friendly solution.
  • Predictive scheduling and ETA forecasting are more important than live precision.
  • You need scalable tracking for planning without full AIS coverage.

The Satellite AIS Data API is unmatched in accuracy and reach, making it essential for high-stakes maritime operations. Meanwhile, the Satellite Estimator API offers a cost-effective alternative for businesses focused on forecasting and planning.

Activating the Satellite Estimator API Add-On:

The Satellite Estimator API is not included in the standard Datalastic subscription plans by default. It is available only as an add-on feature, which means you will need to activate it separately.

To start using it:

  1. Choose a subscription plan that supports add-ons (e.g., Experimenter, Developer Pro…).
  2. The SAT-E add-on will be enabled for your API key.
  3. Use your API key to access the endpoint as shown in the example request above.
