How to Connect Datalastic to Claude and ChatGPT?

API Knowledge zone, Maritime API

Connecting Datalastic to Claude and ChatGPT is an easy and fast process that you’ll be surprised by it, following this tutorial.

By connecting Datalastic through its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, you can give AI assistants direct access to real-time maritime intelligence, vessel tracking, port information, voyage history, AIS data, and shipping analytics.

Useful resources:

What is Datalastic MCP?

The Datalastic MCP server implements the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that enables AI assistants to securely communicate with external tools, APIs, and databases. MCP acts as the bridge between large language models and live data sources, allowing Claude and ChatGPT to execute actions and retrieve real-time information on demand.

The official Datalastic MCP server is available at:

https://mcp.datalastic.com/mcp

It is a remote HTTP server, so no local server installation is required.

By using MCP, Datalastic exposes its maritime APIs as AI-accessible tools without requiring users to manually integrate endpoints into every workflow.

Why Connect Datalastic to Claude and ChatGPT?

Datalastic is a leading provider of maritime intelligence APIs and vessel tracking data. Through its MCP server, Datalastic extends these capabilities directly into AI assistants, enabling Claude and ChatGPT to interact with live maritime data without requiring users to manually query APIs.

Once connected, you can ask questions such as:

  • “Where is vessel MSC Zoe currently located?”
  • “Find all ports within 100 nautical miles.”
  • “Show the voyage history of this IMO number.”
  • “Identify vessels currently near the Port of Singapore.”
  • “Retrieve vessel specifications for this MMSI.”

Instead of writing API requests, you simply ask your AI assistant in plain English.

Prerequisites Before You Connect Datalastic to Claude and ChatGPT:

Before beginning the setup, make sure you have:

  • A valid Datalastic API key that  you’ll get upon subscribing
  • Access to the Datalastic MCP server
  • Claude or ChatGPT with MCP support enabled
  • Internet access for connecting to the remote MCP server

How to Connect Datalastic to Claude?

There are two main ways to connect Datalastic to Claude:

  1. Connect Claude using Datalastic API key
  2. Connect Claude using browser Sign-in

1. Connect Claude Code Using a Datalastic API Key:

Claude Code also supports authentication through a custom HTTP header.

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your actual Datalastic API key:

claude mcp add --scope user --transport http datalastic https://mcp.datalastic.com/mcp

Do not publish this command with your real API key or save it in a public repository.

Authorize the Connection

Once configured, Claude will authenticate with the Datalastic MCP server.

After authorization, Claude automatically discovers the available maritime tools exposed by Datalastic.

Start Querying Maritime Data

You can immediately begin asking questions such as:

  • Locate a vessel by IMO
  • Search by MMSI
  • Find nearby ports
  • Retrieve vessel characteristics
  • Analyze voyage history
  • Track vessel positions

Claude automatically decides when to call Datalastic tools based on your request.

2. Connect Datalastic to Claude Code Using Browser Sign-In:

Open the Claude Connectors page or open the Connectors section from your Claude settings.

Add a new custom connector using the following details:

Name: DatalasticServer URL: https://mcp.datalastic.com/mcpAuthentication: OAuth or automatic browser sign-in

Do not add an API key or custom header when using browser-based authorization.

After adding the server:

  1. Select Connect or Authorize.
  2. Claude will open a browser window.
  3. Sign in with your Datalastic account.
  4. Approve the requested connection.
  5. Return to Claude after authorization is completed.

Claude will discover the maritime tools exposed by the Datalastic MCP server automatically.

Open a terminal and run:

claude mcp add --scope user --transport http datalastic https://mcp.datalastic.com/mcp --header "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"

Then start the Datalastic authorization process:

claude mcp login datalastic

A browser window should open. Sign in with your Datalastic account and approve the connection.

You can also open Claude Code and run:

/mcp

Select Datalastic and complete the authentication process from the MCP menu.

How to Connect Datalastic to ChatGPT?

If your ChatGPT environment supports MCP connectors, connecting Datalastic follows a similar workflow.

Step 1: Enable Developer Mode

Open ChatGPT settings and enable Developer mode.

Settings → Security and login → Developer mode

Connect Chatgpt to Datalastic data

or: Settings → Apps → Advanced Settings → Developer mode

Developer mode must be available for your account or enabled by your workspace administrator.

Step 2: Create the Datalastic MCP App

Open the ChatGPT Plugins and developer apps page.

Select the plus button or the option to create a new developer-mode app.

Enter:

Name: DatalasticMCP server URL: https://mcp.datalastic.com/mcpAuthentication: OAuth

ChatGPT custom MCP apps do not use the Claude Code terminal command. The connection is created through the ChatGPT interface.

Step 3: Scan the Datalastic Tools

Select Scan Tools.

ChatGPT will connect to the Datalastic MCP server and inspect the available tools.

When the authorization window appears:

  1. Sign in with your Datalastic account.
  2. Approve the connection.
  3. Return to ChatGPT.
  4. Wait for the tool scan to finish.
  5. Select Create.

The Datalastic app should then appear among your enabled or draft developer apps.

Step 4: Enable Datalastic in a Conversation

Start a new ChatGPT conversation.

Open the tools menu using the plus button beside the message box and select:

Developer mode → Datalastic

The exact interface wording may vary.

Step 5: Start Using Maritime Intelligence

You can now interact with Datalastic using natural language instead of REST API calls.

For example:

  • “Track this vessel.”
  • “Find ships near Rotterdam.”
  • “Show the destination of this cargo vessel.”
  • “Lookup this IMO number.”
  • “Which vessels are currently in port?”

Troubleshooting Your Datalastic MCP Connection:

If you’re unable to connect Datalastic to Claude or ChatGPT, verify the following:

  • Your API key is valid.
  • The MCP server URL is correct.
  • Authentication completed successfully.
  • Your AI assistant supports MCP connectors.
  • Internet access to the remote MCP server is available.

Most connection issues are related to authentication or incorrect server configuration.

Why Use MCP Instead of Direct API Calls?

While Datalastic already offers powerful REST APIs, MCP provides a more intuitive way to interact with maritime data.

Instead of writing code like:

GET /vessel_info?imo=1234567

You simply ask:

“Tell me everything about vessel IMO 1234567.”

The AI assistant handles tool selection, executes the API call through MCP, and presents the information in a human-readable format.

This significantly lowers the technical barrier for accessing maritime intelligence while preserving the power of Datalastic’s APIs.
