Here is a breakdown of all the columns of the database:

IMO Number: IMO numbers are codes that are assigned uniquely for each vessel by the “International Maritime Organization”. They sort of act as an “ID Number” for ships.

Vessel Name: Vessel names are also uniquely assigned for each ship. We often see vessel names painted on the bodies of ships to easily distinguish them.

Vessel Type Codes: These specify the type of the ship and the nature of their freight (for example, container carrier, dry cargo carrier, chemical carrier, etc.)

Trading Category Code: Indicates the trading status of the vessel.

Built Year: Specifies the year the ship was built.

GT (Gross Tonnage): Indicates the gross tonnage of the ship. Keep in mind that gross tonnage is different from measures and mass weight of the ship. It is the nonlinear measure of a measure’s internal volume.

Engine Designation: These codes (roughly) describe the engine by its fuel injection + the technology used. A full code is broken into multiple variables, each for a different feature of the engine.

Propulsion Type and Propulsion Type Code: These are abbreviations of the propulsion types of ships. Propulsion is the system or the mechanism that is used to generate the power to move a vessel across the water. There are many different propulsion systems depending on many different factors such as the energy or the machinery used such as motor, steam turbine, electric motors, diesel-electric, gas turbine, and more. Each type of propulsion system has a unique 2-letter code which all can be found in the database.

MCO (Maximum Continuous Output): This column refers to the maximum amount of power the engine can produce within safe limits, during running continuously.

MCO Unit: The energy unit of the MCO of the ship.

MCO RPM (Revolutions per Minute): The number of turns within a minute that the engine is capable of.

Engine Builder: The brand that has built the engine of the ship or the boat.

Engine Designer:  The brand that owns the design of the engine.
